In a significant development, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has granted clearance for the participation of 634 athletes across 38 diverse sporting disciplines in the upcoming Asian Games. These athletes have met the prescribed selection criteria set by the ministry. Notably, this number is in contrast to the 850 athletes initially recommended by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

The forthcoming Asian Games will witness a robust Indian presence across 39 sports disciplines. The cleared athletes will compete in a wide array of sports, including archery, aquatics (swimming and diving), athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, judo, rowing, shooting, table tennis, weightlifting, and various other disciplines. India’s performance in the previous edition of the Asian Games held in 2018 was commendable. With a total of 572 athletes participating, the country secured an impressive tally of 70 medals, including 16 golds. Other sports with notable participation include rowing with 33 athletes, shooting with 30, cricket with 30, volleyball with 24, kabaddi with 24, aquatics with 22, and basketball with 20, among others.

The Asian Games are scheduled to kick off with a vibrant opening ceremony on September 23, 2023.
