Mets trade three-time Cy Young winner to AL West team

The New York Mets entered the field five months ago believing they were headed to the World Series with the largest payroll in baseball history.

The New York Mets team was filled with Cy Young winners, All-Stars and MVPs.

The Mets traded three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers for prized prospect Luisangela Acuña on Saturday.

The trade began to take a sledgehammer to the team, and began trade talks with the Astros to send Justin Verlander back to Houston.

In this deal, the Mets covered all but $22.5 million owed to Scherzer.

Scherzer waived his no-trade clause and agreed to exercise his $43.3 million player option in 2024.

The Mets proved that on Saturday night with a 49-54 record, leaving them 17 games out of first place.
