Although Dane van Niekerk started her playing career as a leg-spinner, she wasted no time in proving her ability with the bat and being promoted up the batting order. Her first claim to fame was when she got inducted into the men's side at the Eastern Province cricket academy, making her the first female cricketer to join them. Both her T20I and ODI debuts were in the formats' respective World Cups in 2009. In only her second ODI, the then 16-year-old returned figures of 3-11 against Sri Lanka. The all-rounder also became the first South African female to take a hat-trick, achieving the feat against West Indies in 2013. A year later in a Women's World Twenty20 game against Bangladesh, van Niekerk and Lizelle Lee came together to post 163 - making it the then highest unbeaten opening stand in women's international T20 history. van Niekerk was appointed South Africa's captain in all formats in June 2016, replacing Mignon du Preez who had stepped down from the role.
